ⅠIntroduction
The English major of the School of Foreign Languages at Northwest University originated from the Department of Literature and Language during the period of Shaanxi University Hall in 1902. It has undergone multiple transformations, including being part of the English Department of the Faculty of Literature at Northwest University, Northwest Russian Specialized School, Foreign Language Translation Committee, and English Teaching and Research Group. In 1966, due to the implementation of the “half-work, half-study” system in higher education institutions, teaching work was interrupted. In 1979, the Foreign Language Department of Northwest University was re-established, offering a major in English Language and Literature. In 2000, the Foreign Language Department merged with the Department of College English and other foreign language institutions on campus to establish the School of Foreign Languages, providing education in seven languages: English, Japanese, Russian, German, French, Arabic, and Italian, for doctoral, master's, and undergraduate students.
The English major of the School of Foreign Languages is a first-class major in ordinary universities and colleges in Shaanxi Province and the country. The school has one first-level discipline master’s degree authorization point in foreign language and literature, with three sub-disciplines: English language and literature, Japanese language and literature, and foreign linguistics and applied linguistics, as well as one master’s degree authorization point in translation (MTI) professional degree. The school has a distinctive educational philosophy, adhering to the discipline characteristics and talent training direction of cultural and literary translation. The literary translation team has twice won the Shaanxi Provincial Higher Education Teaching Achievement Award. The Snow Research Center of Shaanxi Province under the school has formed a “Three Schools (Peking University, Northwest University, Yan’an University), One Park (Yan’an Red Star Park), and One Platform (Yan’an Red Cloud Platform)” training model. It has established educational cooperation relationships with the Helen Snow Foundation of the United States, the China Friendship Association, the Song Qingling Foundation of Shanghai, the Foreign Affairs Office of Shaanxi Province, the Foreign Affairs Office of Xi’an City, and the Eighth Route Army Office of Xi’an City.
The school has one member of the Ministry of Education’s Teaching Steering Committee, one teaching master in Shaanxi Province, and one “Most Influential Foreign Expert in the 40th Anniversary of Reform and Opening Up” in China.
The school has signed framework cooperation agreements with many universities such as the University of Abel and the University of Essex in the United Kingdom, Southern Utah University, Brigham Young University, and the University of Missouri-Kansas City in the United States.
